On the occasion of World Hydrography Day, while pointing that that sea transportation is the most efficient way to transit goods internationally Nader Pasande stated that: Due to its access to the Caspian Sea in the north and the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman in the south, Iran enjoys 5790 km of coastline and about 3,000 km of which is part of the international sea routes. such a position offers a huge potential for international maritime trade to the country.
The Director General of Maritime Safety and Protection of the Ports and Maritime Organization stated that in recent years, the volume of Iran-Europe maritime transport has been increasing and Iran has been able to expand the possibility of direct trade with European countries by accessing international waters. Undoubtedly, one of the necessities of safe maritime transport is the access to up to dated charts for sea routes and waterways, which is provided by the collection of marine data, including hydrography.
According to Pasandeh, in addition to promoting maritime safety, the hydrographic engages in other maritime activities, including the exploitation of marine resources such as aquatic and mineral resources, the management and protection of the marine environment, recreational sailing, defense and maritime security, prevention of unexpected events such as floods and tsunamis and coastal management.
this year the World Hydrography Day coincides with the 100th anniversary of the establishment of this organization with the slogan "One hundred years of international cooperation in the field of hydrography". Iran has been an active member of this organization and its technical committee in 10 specialized working groups and 15 regional hydrographic commissions to promote maritime.
Hydrography provides the basis for all activities which involve the sea. The International Hydrographic Organization works to ensure that all the world's seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted, thereby supporting safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment. It coordinates the activities of national hydrographic offices and sets standards in order to promote uniformity in nautical charts and documents. It issues survey best practices and provides guidelines to maximize the use of hydrographic information.
